Etymology: < sub- prefix + crureus n. Compare the adjectives post-classical Latin subcruralis (1756 or earlier) and French sous-crural (1773 or earlier), both designating the subcrureus muscle.

Anatomy. Now rare.

A small muscle located under the vastus intermedius (crureus) muscle, originating from the femur and inserting into the suprapatellar bursa (also more fully subcrureus muscle). In early use also: †any of two or more bands of muscle forming this (obsolete).The preferred name for this muscle is now articularis genu.
