Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: highland n., -ry suffix.
Etymology: < highland n. + -ry suffix, probably after Irishry n. Compare earlier highlander n.
The people of the Scottish Highlands; Scottish Highlanders collectively. Also: Highland character or identity.The example given by Todd in quot. 1818 is attributed to Smollett; however Smollett himself uses Highlanders ( Humphry Clinker (1771) III. 54).
