1914 G. Warrack Folk Songs of Tuscan Hills p.v. Of the verse-form which belongs to the Sicilian equivalent of the Rispetto, the Canzona or Strambotto, an octave of lines alternately rhyming, there is said to be only one example amongst the Tuscan poems.
1914 G. Warrack Folk Songs of Tuscan Hills p.v. Tigri notes that the octave poems amongst the Rispetti are sometimes also in the Pistoian mountains called Strambotti (a word derived..from strani motti = ‘strange words, quaint conceits’); some writers give this name to the Sententious Rispetti.
1931 J. Torbarina Italian Influence on Poets of Ragusan Republic II. iii. 143 Their origin..is the ottava of the Italian strambotto. Though it had its prime towards the end of the preceding century, the strambotto continued to flourish far into the Italian Cinquecento.
1960 New Oxf. Hist. Music III. xi. 395 The collection [sc. the fourth book of Petrucci's frottole] contains 47 strambotti, 19 frottole, 14 ode, and 9 sonetti. The appearance of strambotti in such great number is noteworthy, for although their artistic value is low indeed, from this form developed the later ottava rima.
