Etymology: < post-classical Latin pneumonitis (1766 or earlier) < ancient Greek πνευμον- , πνεύμων lung (see pneumono- comb. form) + post-classical Latin -itis -itis suffix. Compare earlier post-classical Latin pleuripneumonitis (1754).
Medicine.
Inflammation of the parenchyma of the lung, (in later use) esp. of non-infectious (allergic, physical, chemical, etc.) origin; an instance of this. Cf. pneumonia n.
