释义

stark nakedadj.n.

Forms: see stark adj. and adv. and naked adj. and n.1

Etymology: An alteration of start naked adj., after stark adv., perhaps by association with stark dead adj. Compare also slightly later stark blind adj., and see further discussion at stark adv. 2a.The isolated early use in quot. c1390 at sense A. 1 may perhaps echo stark adj. 5, i.e. ‘stiffly naked’ or ‘stiff and naked’ (although another manuscript reads simply all naked).
