Etymology: Probably partly < classical Latin statiōnālis (of a celestial object) stationary ( < statiōn- , statiō station n. + -ālis -al suffix1), and partly < station n. + -al suffix1. Compare French stationnal (1743, in ecclesiastical use). Compare stationary adj.
