单词 steding
释义

stedingn.

Forms:

α. Old English sæding (transmission error), Old English steding, Middle English stedyng- (in compounds), Middle English stedyngg.

β. Middle English steting, Middle English stetingg, Middle English stetyng, Middle English stetynge, Middle English stretyng (transmission error).

γ. Middle English stotingg, late Middle English stodyng.

δ. Middle English stechyng (transmission error), Middle English stythyng.

Origin: Apparently a borrowing from early Scandinavian.
Etymology: Apparently < early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic stæðingr , Old Norwegian stœðingr , early modern Danish støding (1563), all in sense ‘kind of brace, preventer brace’) < a variant (with i-mutation) of the Scandinavian base of stoða to stay, support, help, and stoð post, prop (see stud n.1) + the Scandinavian base of Old Icelandic -ingr -ing suffix1. Compare later stud n.1 5 and studrope n. at stud n.1 Compounds, both probably in the same sense.Compare ( < the same early Scandinavian word) Anglo-Norman and Old French (Normandy) estuinc , Old French (Normandy) estoinc kind of brace (see studdingsail n.). Variant forms. Early association with the etymologically related Old English stod (see stud n.1 and compare studrope n. at that entry) and also with the less closely related stede (see stead n.) may have influenced the consonantism of the α. forms, the former may also have influenced the vocalism of the γ. forms. The medial t in the β. forms and in stotingg is unexplained; it has been suggested that it was influenced by Dutch stotinge act of pushing or thrusting (see studdingsail n.), but this presents semantic difficulties. Dutch influence has also been suggested for the vowel of the γ. forms (compare further stoytenesale at studdingsail n. α. forms).
Nautical. Obsolete.
A rope used to strengthen or control the yard of a square sail; a brace or preventer (see brace n.3, preventer n. 3). Also attributive and appositive, as steding-pulley, steding-rope, etc.
