Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps compare Swedish sprund peg, tap, bung, stopper, apparently a variant of spund in similar sense < Middle Low German spund , spunt or German Spund (12th cent. in Old High German as spunt- in spuntloh hole (e.ɡ. in a barrel) which can be closed by a tap or bung; compare Middle Dutch spond (Dutch spon )), probably ultimately < classical Latin expunct- , past participial stem of expungere , lit. ‘to punch out (a hole)’ (see expunct v.).

Obsolete. rare.

Apparently: a component part used in the construction of a vessel. N.E.D. (1915) defines as ‘A spar or pole’, but the uncertain origin of the word (see etymology), and the likelihood that it was employed partly or wholly for alliterative purposes, necessitate a less specific definition.
