Etymology: Either representing an unrecorded Old English *speht (*speoht), or < Middle Dutch or Middle Low German specht (Dutch specht, West Frisian specht, spjucht), = Old Saxon speth (sic), Old High German speht (Middle High German speht, speiht, German specht): compare Danish spætte, Norwegian spetta, Swedish hackspett, and Old French espoit, espois (from Germanic). The ultimate affinities of the word are uncertain. Speckt in Johnson (1755) is due to a misprint in Ainsworth (1736) at Picus.

Obsolete.
