Etymology: < post-classical Latin pyritosus (1739 in the passage translated in quot. 1741) < classical Latin pyrītēs pyrites n. + -ōsus -ose suffix1. Compare pyritous adj. N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (pəə·r-, pi·ritōus) /ˈpaɪər-/ /ˈpɪrɪtəʊs/.
