Etymology: < boat n.1 + hook n.1 Compare Dutch bootshaak, boothaak (16th cent.), Middle Low German bōteshāke, bōshāke, and (perhaps after Middle Low German) Old Icelandic bátshaki, Old Swedish batshaki (Swedish båtshake).
A long pole with a hook and a spike at one end, by means of which a boat can be pulled towards, or pushed off from, another vessel or a fixed object.
