This change had taken place by 1097.

1973 P. D. Whitting Byzantine Coins iii. 40 A new gold coin lighter than the solidus was introduced... The new and lighter coin was called the nomisma tetarteron. These tetartera cannot be distinguished by eye until the later part of Basil II's reign... The name means ‘a fourth part’, i.e. a piece of standard weight diminished by a quarter of a tremissis equivalent to ½ of the whole.
