At some point after this, the name was appropriated to describe a copper coin of similar small, thick fabric, first struck by Alexius as an element of his reformed coinage. This change had taken place by 1097.

These tetartera cannot be distinguished by eye until the later part of Basil II's reign... The name means ‘a fourth part’, i.e. a piece of standard weight diminished by a quarter of a tremissis equivalent to ½ of the whole.
