Etymology: < boat n.1 + axe n.1 In sense 2 after Swedish båtyxa (O. Almgren 1912, in Antikvarisk Tidskrift för Sverige XX. 8–10; also in båtyxkultur boat axe culture); earlier in Swedish in båtformiga yxa boat-shaped axe (1879 or earlier), båtformiga stenyxa boat-shaped stone axe (1874 or earlier), and similar descriptive phrases. Compare (also after Swedish) German Bootaxt, Bootaxtkultur (both 1913 or earlier), bootförmige Axt (1908 or earlier).
