Etymology: Early Middle English slaht , slaȝt , apparently representing Old English *sleaht (compare genitive plural wælsleahta ), variant of slæht, sleht, sliht, etc.: see sleight n.2 The unmutated vowel corresponds to that of Old Frisian slachte (Frisian slacht), Middle Dutch and Dutch slacht, Old Saxon -slahta, Old High German slaht (German schlacht) and slahta (Middle High German slahte), Old Norse and Icelandic sláttr masculine and slátta feminine.
Obsolete.
