单词 braxy
释义

braxyn.adj.

Brit. /ˈbraksi/, U.S. /ˈbræksi/, Scottish English /ˈbraksɪ/
Forms: see below.
Etymology: Etymology and even form uncertain: Jamieson has the forms braik (singular), bracks (plural), braxes (plural), and braxit , as well as braxy . Either the latter is originally an adjective brax-y , formed from a collective plural bracks , brax (compare peasy , poxy ), or it is an erroneous singular deduced < braxes , as if this were braxie-s . Probably ‘the bracks ’ is the original, being a special use of the plural of brack n.1 in some sense derived < break v. Compare Old English bræc rheum, catarrh, also bræc-cóðu and bræc-séocnes falling sickness, bræc-séoc ill with falling sickness. As examples of the ways in which names of diseases are treated, we may compare pox for pocks, axis, axes, axys (often as plural) for access, jaundys plural for jaundice.
