Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Sivapithecus.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Sivapithecus, genus name (G. E. Pilgrim 1910, in Rec. Geol. Surv. India 40 63) < Siva (Sanskrit Śiva ), the name of a Hindu god (see Shiva n.¹) + scientific Latin -pithecus (fossil) ape (see Pliopithecus n.), perhaps so called on account of the first finds being made close to an area significant to Hindu mythology.

Palaeontology.

Any of several extinct apes of the genus Sivapithecus, known from Miocene fossil remains originally found in the Siwalik Hills of South Asia, and dated to between 12.5 and 8.5 million years ago. Also: the genus itself. Cf. Ramapithecus n.The genus Sivapithecus is believed to have included the ancestor of the orangutans (genus Pongo).
