Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi bhaṇḍsāl.
Etymology: < Hindi bhaṇḍsāl, bhansāl storehouse ( < Sanskrit bhāṇḍaśālā < bhāṇḍa goods, merchandise + śālā house, building: see sala n.3), in α. and β. forms perhaps with remodelling of the first element after bank n.1 or its Romance equivalents, and in β. forms probably with remodelling of the second element after hall n.1 Compare Portuguese bangaçal (1520 with reference to the Maldives, 1524 with reference to Goa) and also French banquesalle (1610 with reference to the Maldives).With quot. 1850 at sense 1a perhaps compare Malay bangsal (earlier †bāngsal) hut, shed, storehouse (probably < Hindi), although the Malay word originally referred to more modest structures.

1850 Jrnl. Indian Archipel. & Eastern Asia 4 182 Bankshall, the name given by Europeans to the office of the Master Attendant, or Intendant of a Port. It is most probably taken from the Malay word Bañgsal, a shed, an outhouse.
b. A quay or dockyard, usually having rudimentary buildings for storage. Obsolete.
