Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Banksia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Banksia, genus name ( C. Linnaeus filius Supplementum Plantarum (1782) 15) < the name of Sir Joseph Banks (1743–1820), English naturalist who collected the first specimens of the plant + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix1.
Any of the shrubs and trees constituting the genus Banksia (family Proteaceae), the members of which are native to Australia and have evergreen foliage with numerous small nectar-rich flowers typically borne on cylindrical spikes (often likened to bottlebrushes). Also (in form Banksia): the genus itself.
