单词 black rod
释义

Black Rodn.

Brit. /blak ˈrɒd/, U.S. /ˌblæk ˈrɑd/
Forms: see black adj. and n. and rod n.1
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: black adj., rod n.1
Etymology: < black adj. + rod n.1, with reference to the black wand carried by the usher as a symbol of office. Compare Gentleman-usher of the Black Rod (see gentleman-usher n.). Compare post-classical Latin hostiarius ab atra virga nuncupatus (1631 or earlier in a translation of the Constitutions of the Officers of the Order of the Garter), Law French huissier de la verge noire (1678 or earlier), vierge noire (1724 or earlier in a translation of the Constitutions of the Officers of the Order of the Garter). The title is apparently first attested in the Constitutions of the Officers of the Order of the Garter 14 Hen. VIII (1522–3). It is unclear whether the lost original of the Constitutions (which are only known from later French and Latin translations) was written in English, Law French, or post-classical Latin.
In the United Kingdom (in full Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod): the principal usher of the Lord Chamberlain’s department and the House of Lords; this office (cf. serjeant-at-arms at sergeant n. 5(b)). In Canada, Australia, and New Zealand (in full Usher of the Black Rod): the principal usher of the Senate or other legislative assembly; this office. Cf. gentleman-usher n.The original office was created in 1350 by royal letters patent, the title dating from 1522.
