(esp. in Tibetan Buddhism and Zoroastrianism) a funerary ritual in which a corpse is placed on a mountain top to decompose, or to be eaten by vultures or other birds. [Apparently originally (with reference to the Tibetan custom) after Chinese tiānzàng (1907 or earlier; < tiān sky, heaven (see tian n.1) + zàng burial; compare also niǎozàng , lit. ‘bird burial’ (already in Middle Chinese)); uses of the English expression with reference to customs in other cultures appear to be transferred uses (within English).
