Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: simple n., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < simple n. (compare sense 4a at that entry) + -ist suffix, perhaps after Middle French simpliste (1588). Compare slightly earlier simpler n.1, simplicist n. 1.
Now historical and rare.
A person skilled in the preparation and use of medicinal simples (simple n. 4a), esp. herbal simples; a herbalist.Cf. simpler n.1, simplicist n. 1, simplifier n.1
