1. Chemistry. In the names of substances which are polymers of compounds containing a vinyl group —CH=CH2. All these often occur as single words.
a. polyvinyl alcohol n. any of a series of polymers consisting wholly or largely of the repeating unit —CH2—CHOH—, prepared by hydrolysis of polyvinyl esters and used as emulsifiers, adhesives, coatings, films, fibres, etc.; abbreviated PVA.
