Etymology: Either (i) < the Germanic base of side adj. + a Germanic adverbial suffix seen also in e.g. widen adv., outen adv., bove adv., or (ii) an alteration of side adv.¹, after widen adv., arising from use in collocation with that word. Compare wide and side at side adv.¹ 1, wide and side at side adj. 2b.The early Middle English uses in the Caligula manuscript of Laȝamon’s Brut could alternatively be interpreted as forms of side adv.¹ showing nunnation, a very common feature of the language of this manuscript which has not been satisfactorily explained.
