Origin: Probably a borrowing from French. Etymon: French marquise.
Etymology: Probably < French marquise (although apparently not attested until 1718 in this sense: see marquise n.), the final /z/ probably being interpreted as -s plural.
1. A tent large enough to hold many people (now usually one used for social or commercial functions). Formerly also: †an officer's field tent (obsolete). Also in marquee tent.
