Origin: Apparently a borrowing from early Scandinavian, combined with an English element. Etymons: a form in early Scandinavian, -ock suffix.
Etymology: Apparently < the Scandinavian etymon of sile n.3 (perhaps with an underlying sense ‘young fish, fry’) + -ock suffix. In Orkney and Shetland use probably < the unattested Norn cognate of the Scandinavian words listed at sile n.3 Perhaps compare Old Icelandic silungr , sílungr trout. Compare also (apparently < the same Scandinavian base) Scottish Gaelic sìolag sand eel. Compare later sile n.3 Compare also later piltock n.
