Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin supergressio.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin supergressio action of overstepping (6th cent.), transgression (11th cent. in a British source) < classical Latin supergress- , past participial stem of supergredī to pass over or beyond, to exceed, to surpass, excel ( < super- super- prefix + gradī to step, walk: see gradient adj.) + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Middle French supergression (a1374 in Oresme, in an apparently isolated attestation).
Obsolete. rare.
The exceeding of a limit; excess. Also (in physical sense): the action of stepping over or beyond; leaping.
