Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish shtreiml.
Etymology: < Yiddish shtreiml < Middle High German streimel stripe, strip (Old High German strīmil , strīmel ; German (now chiefly regional) Streimel ) < strīmo stripe (see note) + -il , suffix forming diminutives (see -le suffix). The hat is perhaps so called with reference to its broad brim.Further etymology. Old High German strīmo (Middle High German strīm , strīme , German (regional) Streim , Streime ) is < an ablaut variant of the Germanic base of Middle Dutch strieme (Dutch striem ), Middle Low German strēme , both in the senses ‘scar, stripe, strike’, Middle High German strieme stripe (German Strieme and (generalized from the oblique cases) Striemen , now usually in sense ‘bloodied scar due to beating’) < the same Indo-European base (with different suffixation) as stripe n.3 and strike v. Specific forms. In plural forms in -lach after the Yiddish plural forms shtreimlekh, shtreimlakh (the difference in their endings is regional).
Originally and chiefly in Jewish usage: a round, broad-brimmed hat edged with fur worn on the sabbath and holidays by some (esp. Hasidic) Jewish men, usually those who are married.
