With sense 1 compare Middle Dutch schotvrī (early modern Dutch schotvrij ), Middle Low German schotvrī (also schōtesvrī ), Old Swedish skutfrir ; also (with variant first element: see discussion at scot n.2), Old Swedish skatfrir (Swedish skattefri ), early modern Danishskatfri (Danish (regional) skattefri ), all in sense ‘free from scot or tax’. With sense 2 compare Dutch schotvrij, German schussfrei.
