单词 septarchy
释义

septarchyn.

Brit. /ˈsɛptɑːki/, U.S. /ˈsɛpˌtɑrki/
Forms: 1600s septarchie, 1600s 1800s– septarchy.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin septem , -archy comb. form.
Etymology: < classical Latin septem seven (see septem- comb. form) + -archy comb. form, probably as an alteration of heptarchy n.
1. A group of seven districts, kingdoms, or countries, each under its own ruler; spec. the traditional seven kingdoms of Anglo-Saxon England in the 7th and 8th centuries. Also: government by seven rulers. Cf. heptarchy n.The ‘seven kingdoms’ of Anglo-Saxon England were Northumbria, Mercia, East Anglia, Kent, Sussex, Essex, and Wessex. The historical tradition of the seven kingdoms probably derives from Henry of Huntingdon's Historia Anglorum (c1130–55). It is somewhat misleading in that the configuration fluctuated over time, with sometimes more and sometimes fewer than seven kingdoms, the boundaries of which themselves were generally fluid.
