Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French néossine.
Etymology: < French néossine (G. J. Mulder 1838, in Bull. des sci. physiques & nat. en Néerlande 175) < ancient Greek (non-Attic) νεοσσιά (Attic νεοττιά ) bird's nest ( < νεοσσός (Attic νεοττός ) young bird ( < νέος new (see neo- comb. form); the suffix may be compared with that of περισσός superfluous, redundant: see perissad adj. and n.) + -ιά , suffix forming collective nouns) + French -ine -ine suffix5. Compare Dutch neossine, used by the same author in 1843–50. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (niˌǫ·səin) /niːˈɒsaɪn/.
Chemistry. Obsolete.
G. J. Mulder's name for: the mucoprotein which is found in the saliva of certain swiftlets and is the chief component of their edible nests.
