Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: sepsis n., -in suffix1.
Etymology: < seps- (in sepsis n.) + -in suffix1, after German Sepsin (E. von Bergmann & O. Schmiedeberg 1868, in Med. Centralbl. 498).With the form sepsine perhaps compare French sepsine (1871 or earlier; < German).
Chemistry. Now historical and rare.
An unstable poisonous amine obtained from the residue of beer fermentation and other decomposing material.Said to be 2,3-dihydroxypentamethylenediamine, C5H14N2O2.

1868 Lancet 17 Oct. 518/2 In a short communication to the Centralblatt, Drs. Bergmann and Schmiedeberg describe a crystalline substance, to which they have applied the name ‘sulphate of sepsin’, obtained from putrefying materials.
1913 M. J. Rosenau Preventive Med. & Hygiene iii. i. 471 The best known poison which has been isolated in an approximately pure state from decomposing nitrogenous material is sepsin.
1999 E. T. Rietschel & O. Westphal in H. Brade et al. Endotoxin in Health & Dis. i. 5/1 His [sc. Bergmann's] work on sepsin was unfortunately interrupted by the Franco-Prussian war (1870–71) and thereafter not continued.
