1. Self-sufficiency (of a farm) in the production of fertilizers for the soil. Obsolete. rare.

2. Biology. Originally: fertilization (natural or artificial) of a plant by pollen from the same plant. Also more generally: fertilization of any organism (hermaphroditic animal, fungus, etc.) by male gametes (sperm, spores, etc.) from the same organism.
