Etymology: < Turkish seljūq, the name of the reputed ancestor of the Seljuk dynasties.

1. The distinctive epithet of certain Turkish dynasties which ruled over large parts of Asia from the 11th to the 13th cent. Hence used to designate the branch of the Turkish people to whom these dynasties belonged (in contradistinction to Ottoman or Osmanli).
