Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Italian vongola, vongole.
Etymology: < Italian vongola (plural vongole) type of clam (1878; 1550 as gongola ; compare Italian regional (Neapolitan) vonghele ) < classical Latin conchula small shellfish < concha conch n. + -ula -ula suffix.

1. With plural agreement. A kind of edible clam Venerupis decussata (family Veneridae), found in the north-east Atlantic and Mediterranean and used in Italian cookery.
