voodoon. Brit. /ˈvuːduː/, U.S. /ˈvuˌdu/, Caribbean English /ˈvuːˌduː/Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French vaudou. Etymology: < French vaudou, †vaudoux (1797 denoting a powerful supernatural being and a dance apparently of a religious nature; 1846 or earlier denoting the religion and its practitioners) < Fon vodun (non-Christian) god, deity (pronounced with a final nasal vowel: see vodun n.). Compare French Creole vodu, denoting the religion and (also) its practitioners.Forms with final -x reflect French †vaudoux , which appears to be formally plural, but is also attested in the singular as early as 1797. In English such forms are found in both singular and plural uses. The α. forms probably show assimilation of the vowels and may be an English innovation, but compare also the uncommon French variant voudou (1872 or earlier) and French Creole voudou . Specific senses. With sense 3 compare earlier hoodoo n. 3a and to put a hoodoo on at hoodoo n. and adj. Phrases. Potential earlier evidence. Compare the following earlier passage, although it is unclear whether vaudoo should here be interpreted as the name of a deity worshipped in this religion (compare the earliest French sense), or as a noun denoting the religion itself:1820 Louisiana Gaz. 16 Aug. 2/3 For some time past, a house in the suburb Treme, has been used as a kind of temple for certain occult practices and the idolatrous worship of an African deity, called Vaudoo. 1. the world > the supernatural > the occult > sorcery, witchcraft, or magic > non-European magic (miscellaneous) > [noun] > voodoo α. 1846 24 Apr. 2/3 Ex-President Pierrot has, for many years past, been the reputed chief, under the title of ‘Roi’, or ‘Papa’, of the ‘Voudoux’, a superstitious institution derived from Africa, in some respects similar to the ‘Obeah’ of Jamaica. 1888 15 June 5/1 As generally understood, Voodoo means the persistence, in Hayti, of abominable magic, mysteries, and cannibalism, brought originally by the negroes from Africa. 1921 G.
