Etymology: In early use plural after late Latin scrōfulae swelling of the glands, diminutive of scrōfa breeding sow (supposed to be subject to the disease: compare the use of Greek χοιράδες, plural of χοιράς like a hog's back). Later in singular form after medieval Latin scrofula, scrophula (also schrof-, scrufula). From Latin plural are: French scrofules (see scroffles n.), German skrofeln , Swedish skrofler ; also French écrouelles ( < popular Latin *scrofellas : see escroeles n., crewels n.); from Latin singular, Italian scrofola, Spanish escrófula; also from popular Latin type Old English scrofell.
A constitutional disease characterized mainly by chronic enlargement and degeneration of the lymphatic glands. Also called king's evil n. and struma n.
