Later in singular form after medieval Latin scrofula, scrophula (also schrof-, scrufula). From Latin plural are: French scrofules (see scroffles n.), German skrofeln , Swedish skrofler ; also French écrouelles ( < popular Latin *scrofellas : see escroeles n., crewels n.); from Latin singular, Italian scrofola, Spanish escrófula; also from popular Latin type Old English scrofell.
