Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin sciatica.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin sciatica disease characterized by pain in the great sciatic nerve and its branches (from 12th cent. in British sources; also in continental sources, as syatica ), use as noun (short for sciatica passio sciatic illness) of feminine of sciaticus sciatic adj.1 Compare Middle French sciatique (as feminine noun) sciatica, (as masculine noun) person affected by sciatica (both a1365). Compare also Spanish ciática (13th cent.), Portuguese ciática (16th cent.), Italian sciatica (14th cent.).

a. Originally: pain in the hip; disease causing such pain. In later use: spec. the condition of having pain along the course of the sciatic nerve, radiating from the hip down the back of the leg, and most commonly resulting from protrusion of a lumbar vertebral disc. In quot. c1475 applied to pain in the arm, perhaps with humorous intention, or as an extended use with reference to the similarity of the shoulder joint to the hip joint.In quot. 1596 figurative.In the early 17th cent. sometimes used euphemistically as a name for syphilis, of which pain in the joints or sciatic nerve may be a symptom; cf. quot. 1632. Cf. gout n.1 1d.

sciatica cress n. now rare any of several plants of the family Brassicaceae ( Cruciferae) supposed to be effective in the treatment of sciatica; esp. any of several pepperworts (genus Lepidium); also in plural with singular agreement. [Apparently an English formation: Mattioli ( Di Pedacio Dioscoride..Libri cinque della historia et materia medicinale (1557) i. 163 and ii. 310 respectively) notes that plants named ‘Iberide’ and ‘Lepidio’ (probably both plants of the genus Lepidium) are used as remedies for sciatica but he does not use a term corresponding to sciatica cress] .
