Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin schoenanthus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin schoenanthus, schoenianthe (4th cent.) < Byzantine Greek σχοινάνθη (compare the diminutive formation σχοινάνθιον , in the same sense) < σχοῖνος rush (see schoene n.) + ἄνθος flower (see anthos n.); compare ancient Greek σχοίνου ἄνθος, lit. ‘flower of rush’.
Obsolete.
A kind of sweet-scented grass or rush; spec. camel grass, Cymbopogon schoenanthus, a species of lemon grass native to northern Africa and south-western Asia, formerly used in medicine. Cf. squinant n.
