Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding; probably modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: stick n.3, free adj.
Etymology: Apparently < stick n.3 (although this is first attested slightly later) + free adj., probably after German †stichfrei, adjective (1605); compare Dutch †steekvrij (1646). Compare earlier shot-free adj. 2 and also free from stick and shot (see quot. 1637 at stick n.3 1).
Obsolete.

Aeronautics.
Of or relating to flight during which the control column of an aircraft, and hence also the elevator or tailplane, is allowed to move freely. Cf. stick-fixed adj. and adv. (a) at stick n.1 Compounds 2.
