Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: scallywag n.
Etymology: Shortened < scallywag n.
Originally and chiefly English regional slang (chiefly Lancashire and Liverpool).
A young working-class person (esp. a man); spec. a roguish, self-assured male, typically regarded as boisterous, disruptive, or irresponsible. Also: a chancer, a petty criminal.Earliest used in Liverpool; later sometimes spec. to refer to a young man from Liverpool.
