Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from French. Etymon: French uuichet.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps reflecting Anglo-Norman uuichet, variant of wiket wicket n. Compare later wicket n. 5b and Welsh gwiced (in mining) coalface, stall (1819; 13th cent. in general senses of wicket).
Welsh English (northern). Mining. Obsolete. rare.
In a mine: a wide chamber in which coal is cut; = wicket n. 5b.
