Origin: A borrowing from Adnyamathanha.
Etymology: < an expression in Adnyamathanha (South Australia), apparently < wityu hooked stick (used to extract the grub) + varti grub.

1. A hooked stick used for extracting witchetty grubs (cf. sense 2) from holes in trees. Also witchetty-hook. Now rare.

2. More fully witchetty grub. Any of several types of large white larvae (of any of several moths, esp. of the family Cossidae, or of longhorn beetles) which infest the roots and stems of acacia trees and are used as food by Australian Aboriginal peoples and as bait by anglers.
