Etymology: < Latin scabiēs, < scabĕre to scratch, scrape, probably related ultimately to Old English sceafan (see shave v.). N.E.D. (1910) gives the pronunciation as (skēi·biˌīz) /ˈskeɪbɪiːz/.
Pathology.
1. A general term for skin-diseases characterized by scabby or scaly eruption. Obsolete.
