Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Norwegian. Partly a borrowing from Swedish. Etymons: Norwegian sæter, seter; Swedish säter.
Etymology: < Norwegian (Nynorsk) sæter, (Nynorsk and Bokmål) seter (Old Norwegian sætr ) and its cognate Swedish säter < an es -, os -stem derivative of an ablaut variant (lengthened grade) of the same Indo-European base as sit v.; compare (with e -grade) Sanskrit sadas abode, dwelling place, ancient Greek ἕδος seat, stool, abode, dwelling place, Old Icelandic setr abode, dwelling place, setting (of the sun). Compare earlier setter n.3
