Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin ruptivus ; Latin rupt- , rumpere , -ive suffix.
Etymology: In early use < post-classical Latin ruptivus causing eruption (a1250 in a British source) < classical Latin rupt- , past participial stem of rumpere to break (see rumpent n.) + -īvus -ive suffix. In later use < classical Latin rupt-, past participial stem of rumpere (see above) + -ive suffix. Compare Middle French ruptif (1478).
1. Causing, or tending to cause, breaking or rupture; characterized by rupture. Now rare.
