单词 browbeat
释义

browbeatv.

Brit. /ˈbraʊbiːt/, U.S. /ˈbraʊˌbit/
Forms: Past tense browbeat, past participle browbeaten ( browbeat obsolete).
Etymology: < brow n.1 + beat v.1; it appears from the earlier quotations (see especially browbeating n.), that the brow in question was that of the beater, not of the beaten party; but it is not evident whether the meaning was ‘to beat with one's (frowning) brows’, or ‘to beat (? lower) one's brows at’. Connection with beetle-browed is suggested.
