Origin: Probably a borrowing from early Scandinavian.
Etymology: Probably < early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic roðna , Old Swedish rudhna (Swedish rodna )) < the Germanic base of rud n.1 + the Germanic base of -en suffix5. Compare rud v.1 and red v.1 2. With ruddening n. at Derivatives compare ruddon n. and rothum n. (each attested only once, in the works of the Gawain-poet).
Obsolete. rare.
intransitive. To become red; to redden (in the face); to flush.
