Etymology: < German Rubeose ( C. von Noorden Zuckerkrankheit u. ihre Behandlung (ed. 7, 1917) v. 262; also (in same source, rare) as Rubeosis ; < classical Latin rubēns reddish (see rubent adj.) + German -ose -osis suffix), with ending remodelled after -osis suffix.Originally used to denote a reddening of the facial skin in diabetics. The meaning borrowed into English was suggested by R. Salus 1928, in Med. Klinik 17 Feb. 258/1.

A condition characterized by neovascularization (proliferation of blood vessels) of the anterior surface of the iris, sometimes resulting in glaucoma, and occurring most commonly in diabetics; an instance of this. Also rubeosis iridis.
