Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Talavera.
Etymology: < the name of Talavera de la Reina, a town in the province of Toledo, Spain, where this variety of pottery originated.
Originally: a type of Spanish earthenware featuring coloured decoration on an opaque white glaze. Now chiefly: a similar type of glazed earthenware produced in Mexico, esp. in the state of Puebla. Cf. maiolica n. Frequently attributive.
