Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French R.S.V.P..
Etymology: < French R.S.V.P. (1778), initialism < répondez, s'il vous plaît please reply < répondez , imperative of répondre to reply (see respond v.) + si if + il it + vous , 2nd plural personal pronoun + plaît , 3rd singular of plaire to please (see please v.).Although the following apparently identifies the placing of R.S.V.P. at the bottom of an invitation as a practice specific to London, the initialism is found in correspondence in France from the late 18th cent., and in invitations from the 1820s or earlier:1816 P. J. B. Nougaret Londres I. ix. 71 Il est d'usage à Londres, parmi les personnes du premier rang, d'ajouter au bas de leurs cartes d'invitation les quatre lettres initiales: R.S.V.P.
